The lighter with a poker in it
The Clipper has been made in Barcelona by Flamagas since 1972 and it is the lighter every roller ends up with. The reason is the removable flint system: pull it out and it doubles as a packing tool for tamping a joint or clearing a bowl, then clicks back in.
It is refillable with standard butane and the flint is replaceable, so one Clipper lasts years instead of ending up in a bin after a week. The round body sits comfortably in the hand, the flame is adjustable, and the nylon shell shrugs off drops.

Why a Clipper
The poker
Pull the flint wheel assembly straight out of the body and you have a slim metal rod: the perfect tool for packing the end of a joint after rolling, tamping a bowl or clearing a tip. Push it back in and it is a lighter again. It is the reason rollers reach for a Clipper over any other.

Turn the Clipper upside down, press a standard butane refill can onto the valve on the base for a few seconds, wait a minute before lighting. Butane is sold at most supermarkets and garages.
Grip the flint wheel and pull the whole flint assembly straight up out of the body. Use the rod to pack a rolled joint or tamp a bowl, then slot it back in. Wipe it if it picks up resin.
One lighter in your pocket or hand luggage is generally allowed on South African domestic flights; check the airline. Never pack it in checked baggage and never pack butane refills at all.
A Clipper costs about the same as a couple of disposables and lasts for years with refills, so it is cheaper over time and produces far less waste. And disposables don’t have a poker.
