Rolling a good joint takes a few tries, and everyone’s first one looks a bit sad. Follow these steps with decent papers and properly ground flower, and by the third or fourth you will have it.
What you need
0.5g to 1g of flower
Any strain from the menu. Start with half a gram while you learn.
Indoor flowerHow to roll a joint, step by step
Shop accessories- 01
Grind the flower
Grind it to an even, fluffy texture. Remove any stems.
- 02
Make the tip
Fold a filter card into a small zigzag, then roll it into a cylinder.
- 03
Fill the paper
Hold the paper glue side up and away from you, the tip at one end, and spread the flower evenly.
- 04
Shape it
Pinch the paper and roll it between your fingers to pack the flower into a cone or cylinder.
- 05
Tuck and roll
Tuck the unglued edge around the flower, then roll upwards and lick the glue strip to seal.
- 06
Pack and twist
Tap the joint gently, push the flower down with a pen, and twist the end closed.
Common mistakes
- Runs down one side: the flower is packed unevenly. Shape it longer before tucking.
- Too tight to draw: you packed it hard. Roll it gently between your fingers to loosen.
- Keeps going out: the grind is too coarse or the flower too moist.
- Paper will not stick: too much saliva. A light touch on the glue is enough.
Not in the mood to roll?
Our pre-rolls are 1g of indoor flower, never trim, ready to light, in sativa, indica and hybrid.

Where to enjoy it
Joints are for private spaces: your home, or your accommodation if smoking is allowed. Beaches, the promenade and restaurants are public, and using cannabis there is an offence. Read where you can smoke in Cape Town if you are visiting.
Between 0.5g and 1g. Half a gram is easier to roll while you are learning and plenty for one or two people.
King size papers, because the extra room makes it easier to shape and tuck. Thinner papers burn cleaner once you have the hang of it.
It is not essential, but it makes the joint firmer, easier to smoke to the end, and keeps flower out of your mouth.
Usually the grind is too coarse, the flower is too moist, or the joint is packed too loosely.
A grinder gives a far more even grind than breaking flower up by hand, which means a smoother, more even burn.
