Super service, amazing flower, discreet packaging. Best part is attention to detail… I live in Amsterdam and the flower rivals anything I have had there.

Buying Weed in Cape Town: The Visitor’s Guide

Cape Town guide · Visitors

Shops that look like dispensaries, private clubs, delivery services and plenty of conflicting advice online. Here is how buying weed in Cape Town actually works, from a collective in De Waterkant that looks after visitors every day.

The law, briefly

Is weed legal in Cape Town?

Partly, and the part that matters to a visitor is clear. In 2018 the Constitutional Court ruled that adults may possess, use and grow cannabis in private, and the Cannabis for Private Purposes Act of 2024 put that into law. What neither did is create a retail market: cannabis still cannot be sold over a counter to the public.

That single fact explains everything about how buying works here. Our visitor guide to the law goes through it in more detail.

Adults onlyVisitors have the same rights as residents, and a passport is accepted as ID.
Private use onlyYour room, apartment or Airbnb. Never the beach, the promenade or the street.
No borders, no flightsDo not drive after using it, and do not take it across a border or onto a plane.

How buying works: clubs, collectives and delivery

Because open sale is not allowed, cannabis is supplied by private clubs and collectives. Members jointly own the crop grown for them, and what you pay covers growing, preparing and delivering your share. The membership step is not a red flag: it is how the model stays within the law. At Dixie Jane it is free for life, created at checkout with your name, surname and email, and you add your passport number afterwards.

Walk in to our café

See the products and ask questions at 40 Chiappini Street, De Waterkant. Coffee, wine and beer, happy hour 3 to 6pm. It is a café, not a smoking venue.

Lounges

A few clubs in town have lounges where members sit and smoke. Good for a social afternoon, though some charge monthly fees that rarely suit a short stay.

Delivery to where you stay

The easiest option for most visitors. Order online and it arrives by Uber within 90 minutes, usually under 45, in plain packaging, to hotels, guesthouses and Airbnbs.

What not to do

  • Drive after using cannabis. The rules are the same as for alcohol.
  • Take it across a border, onto a flight or onto a cruise ship. Finish it or leave it behind.
  • Buy from people on the street. You have no idea what you are getting or how strong it is.
  • Give or share it with anyone under 18.
First time?

Start low, go slow

Holiday is a good time to try cannabis and a bad time to overdo it. Take 5mg of an edible and wait two hours, or share one pre-roll. Keep the first evening free, and skip the wine.
