Every strain on our menu is labelled sativa, indica or hybrid. The labels are a useful shortcut, but they are only half the story. Here is what they mean, and what to look at alongside them.
Where sativa and indica come from
The names started as botany: sativa plants are tall with narrow leaves, indica plants short and bushy with broad leaves.
Over time they became shorthand for experience. Growers and customers noticed that many sativa-type strains felt bright and energising and many indica-type strains felt heavy and calming. Almost every modern strain is actually a cross, so the label now describes which side a strain leans towards. A third type, ruderalis, is a small, hardy plant used mainly by breeders to make autoflowering strains.

ZkittlezWhy terpenes matter as much as type
Two sativas can feel quite different, and the reason is often their terpenes: the aromatic compounds that give each strain its smell and flavour. A strain rich in limonene smells of citrus, one rich in myrcene smells earthy and musky. Many people find that the aroma they enjoy points to the experience they enjoy.
Every flower page on our site shows the strain’s terpene profile. Read our guide to terpenes to learn what each one smells like.

A simple approach
- Pick the type by time of day: sativa for daytime, indica for evening, hybrid if unsure.
- Then pick by smell: fruity, citrus, earthy or gassy.
- Start with a small amount and note how it felt.
- Try a different type next time and compare.
Botanically, sativa plants are tall and narrow-leaved and indica plants short and broad-leaved. As labels, sativa strains are often described as uplifting and indica strains as calming.
A cross between sativa and indica genetics. Most modern strains are hybrids, leaning more towards one side or balanced between them.
Many beginners start with a hybrid for a balanced experience, in a small amount, on a relaxed evening.
A small, hardy cannabis type that flowers automatically. Breeders use it to create autoflowering strains. It is rarely sold on its own.
Not always. Terpenes, dose, setting and your own body chemistry all play a part, so treat the label as a guide.
