Most cannabis sold on the street in South Africa is grown outdoors. All of ours is grown indoors. Here is what the difference actually is, how to tell them apart, and why it shows up in the price.
How indoor and outdoor compare
Dense and frosty
Indoor buds are usually tighter, with a heavy coat of resin glands. Outdoor buds are often larger and looser.
Terpenes intact
Indoor flower, grown out of the wind and harsh sun, tends to keep a louder, cleaner aroma.
More predictable
A controlled environment means potency and flavour vary far less from batch to batch.
Why it costs more
Lights, climate control, electricity and far smaller harvests make indoor flower more expensive to grow.
Two very different ways to grow
Outdoor cannabis grows in soil under the sun, planted in spring and harvested in autumn. It can be excellent, but the crop is at the mercy of rain, wind, pests and the season, and one harvest a year is typical.
Indoor cannabis grows under lights in a sealed room, where growers control light, temperature, humidity and nutrients for every stage. It costs far more to run, but it allows several harvests a year and a much more consistent result. Ours is grown hydroponically from clones of selected mother plants. Not at all
Well-grown outdoor cannabis can be lovely, and some growers in South Africa produce great sun-grown flower. The difference is control and consistency, which is why we grow indoors.
Outdoor at home
If you want to try growing, outdoors is the natural place to start. Read our guide to growing at home.
Indoor flower is usually denser, more aromatic and more consistent from batch to batch, because every part of the environment is controlled. Well-grown outdoor flower can still be very good.
Lights, climate control and electricity are costly, and indoor rooms produce smaller harvests than open fields.
Yes. All of our flower is grown indoors, hydroponically, by our own collective.
Indoor buds are usually tight, frosty and neatly trimmed, with a strong, clean aroma.
Often, but not always. The bigger difference is consistency: indoor flower is far more predictable.
