A grinder is the least exciting thing in your kit and the one that makes the biggest difference to how a joint burns. Here is why the grind matters and how to choose one.
What a good grind does
An even grind gives an even burn.
Flower broken up by hand ends up as a mix of chunks and dust. The chunks burn slowly, the dust burns fast, and the joint runs down one side. A grinder turns a bud into consistent, fluffy pieces that pack evenly into a paper or a dry herb vaporiser, so you get the flavour of the strain and a smooth draw to the end.
Three ways to break up flower
By hand
Fine in a pinch. Sticky resin ends up on your fingers rather than in the joint, and the result is lumpy.
Toothed grinder
Rows of metal teeth shred the flower as you twist. Quick and cheap, but it can tear and compress the buds.
Flower Mill
Designed to cut flower cleanly with a milling plate instead of teeth, for a fluffy, even grind.
Flower Mill Next Gen PremiumHow to use and look after a grinder
Shop accessories- 01
Break it into pieces
Pull larger buds into two or three pieces and remove stems.
- 02
Load around the edge
Place pieces around the outside, not the centre.
- 03
Twist gently
Five to ten turns is plenty. Over-grinding turns flower to dust.
- 04
Tap and empty
Tap the grinder on the table to release everything.
- 05
Clean it weekly
A dry brush clears most build-up. Soak metal parts in isopropyl alcohol when sticky.
- 06
Replace worn plates
Flower Mill plates are replaceable when they lose their edge.
Grinders and rolling essentials
2.0 or 2.5 inch?
The 2.0 inch Flower Mill is pocket-sized and suits one or two joints at a time. The 2.5 inch holds more and is easier to load if you roll for friends or fill a vaporiser.
Rolling it
Once it is ground, follow our step-by-step guide to rolling a joint, or skip it all with a pre-roll.
You can break flower up by hand, but a grinder gives a far more even result, which means a smoother, more even burn.
A toothed grinder shreds flower between metal teeth. The Flower Mill is designed to cut it with a milling plate instead, for a fluffier, more even grind.
Brush it out weekly, and soak metal parts in isopropyl alcohol whenever it starts to feel sticky or stiff.
A 2.0 inch model is compact for personal use. A 2.5 inch model holds more and is easier to load for larger amounts.
Yes. Replacement plates are sold separately, so you do not need a new mill when the plate wears.
